The role of a leader changes over time. 70 years ago the widespread model of leadership in business was one in which the leader was seen as a person of authority who knew best what needs to be done by others. Command and control prevailed. Societies changed. Complexity increased. Business models changed. Employees expectations and capabilities changed. Hence, the almost fearful talk about the expectations of Millennials. Today, we associate different leadership qualities with great leaders. We hear the importance of a leader being a servant, coach, and integrator. It is important as a leader to be aware when we apply ‘old school’ leadership. At the same time it takes a conscious effort to create new habits that are more likely to be successful in our current business world. Since individual leaders are often less aware of their style and impact, leadership coaching can be a very effective starting point to create those new leadership habits. A Leader with foresight is also receptive to any future changes that we need to adapt to. Inclusive Leadership is likely to stay important for the next decade and surveys like the Global Human Capital Trends help us to find out what is next. What do you think?
