Diversity is the freedom to be ourselves. The freedom to think, feel and act in our own unique way. This is enhancing our well-being, energy and true potential. Many of us need to re-learn how to be ourselves again. Assumptions that we make about expectations and what is accepted by others can make us shift away from our true self. We sacrifice some of our freedom and cover up parts in us out of fear of retributions. Covering up is taking away our energy and is holding us back from reaching our true potential.

The freedom to be ourselves does come with a responsibility. First, the responsibility to continue to better ourselves. No-one is perfect. The freedom to be ourselves also means that we are honest with ourselves. We should make an effort to change unhelpful habits instead of just saying “this is me”. Secondly, we have the responsibility to grant others their freedom too. Only if we would live alone away from any social interactions we could adopt a pure egocentric view. Allowing others the freedom to be themselves means we are including them into our social network the way they are, without feeling the need to change them.

Inclusion is the bond between diverse people. Being open minded and tolerant are key ingredients to make this bond strong.

  1. How can we re-learn to be ourselves again?
  2. Where do you see people covering up who they are and why?
  3. What else can help diverse people to co-exist or even thrive with each other?
  4. When would the freedom to be yourself need to take a backseat? Simplified example: I like to eat my tuna sandwich at my desk but my colleague next to me hates the smell.
