What are the skills of future leaders?

The role of a leader changes. 70 years ago the role of a business leader was one of authority. The person most qualified. The person who knew best what needs to be done by others. Command and control prevailed.

Since then societies changed. Complexity increased. Business models changed. Employees expectations and capabilities changed. Hence, the almost fearful talk about the expectations of Millennials. Today, we associate different leadership qualities with great leaders.

What are the new skills of a future leader and how is this different from traditional leadership? We hear about a leader being a servant, enabler of talent,  coach, and integrator. Leaders are measured on how they bring themselves into the people interaction through their personality, authenticity, humility.

There are still situations of course where the traditional, ‘old school’ leadership is required, but they are becoming less and rightly so. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made under time pressures. Sometimes people are divided about an issue and it has to go one way or the other. Leader in those situations need to be decisive and play they authority card so that everyone can move on.

Building skills as a future leader takes a conscious effort. Old habits need to be replaced by new habits that are more likely to be successful in our current business world. Leadership coaching is very effective for leaders to become aware of their style and impact.
